SMETHPORT — An apparent lightning strike hit a utility pole next to the Valley Inn in Farmers Valley Friday afternoon, causing a temporary power outage to the bar-restaurant. The initial call at 4:52 p.m. reported a possible commercial fire, prompting the response of the Norwich Township Volunteer Fire Department and Star Hose Company of Port Allegany to join Smethport firemen at the scene on Route 46. Soon, however, the Norwich and Star Hose Company responses were cancelled.
First reports were smoke in the building, which caused an evacuation. Smethport Fire Department Deputy Chief Eric Barber said that there was no smoke showing when the firefighters conducted a visual inspection of the premises.
Reports from the scene noted that a Penelec employee with a truck was in Smethport Borough at the time, and after being alerted by the local police department, reported to the scene and restored power at 5:48 p.m., when the establishment resumed its normal business schedule. Smethport responded with two trucks and 20 men. The department’s fire police handled traffic control.
