SMETHPORT (EC) — Heavy rains that moved through parts of the county late Wednesday afternoon caused flooding of roads and homes.
Assisting the Rew Volunteer Fire Department and the Smethport Fire Department were Keating and Foster township road crews and personnel from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Mike O’Connell, first assistant chief of the Rew Volunteer Fire Department, said that about 4 inches of water were flowing across Route 46 at the Columbia Hill Road.
Pump details were called to four homes in the Coleville area that had flooded basements. In one case, personnel from UGI Energy Company responded where natural gas was apparently leaking.
A road crew from Keating Township worked on the lower part of the Bordell Road, while a Foster Township crew took care of the upper end of the road.
In addition, PennDOT used a snowplow to clear debris from Route 46.
Officials said Routes 46 and 646 were shut down during the emergency.
O’Connell said firemen were in service until about 8:50 p.m.
