SMETHPORT (EC) — Bucktail Post 138, Smethport American Legion, has begun preparations for celebrating the American Legion’s 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated with a huge parade on Labor Day in Smethport.
On Friday, Flag Day, the post conducted a dedication of the new 25-foot aluminum flag pole in front of the post home on West Main Street. Commander Pat Miesowitz, who conducted the brief ceremony, lowered and then raised the American and POW/MIA flags. Seth Digel offered prayers and “Bud” Abbey commanded the memorial firing squad that fired one shot. On the flag pole is a plaque that recognizes the post members, Bucktail Club, auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion for their contributions to the project.
Miesowitz noted the American Legion’s national emblem that is placed on the front of the brick building is being refurbished. In addition, Smethport’s Historical Registry marker. also on the building, has been cleaned.
