HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf on Wednesday announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will distribute $15.4 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement funding to 38 municipalities statewide to fund 50 safety projects.
Bingham Township in Potter County will receive $35,000 to improve safety at Northern Potter School with new solar powered flashing devices, pedestal and signs, according to PennDOT.
The ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.
“This program helps communities across the state make investments in traffic flow and safety,” Wolf said. “These improvements complement the many road, bridge, and multimodal projects happening in Pennsylvania.”
Under state law, grant funding is supplied by fines from red light violations at 30 intersections in Philadelphia. The law specifies that projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. Municipalities submitted 134 applications, totaling almost $38 million in requests.
