Though the sun was shining through a partly cloudy sky, Main Street was raining –– with candy.
Hundreds gathered along Main Street to observe Bradford’s annual Memorial Day parade. The parade, which kicked off at 10:15 a.m., was lead by local first responders walking and carrying flags displaying our nation’s colors the whole length of the street. Donning a suit, in disregard to the heat, Mayor Tom Riel walked with the first responders while smiling and waving to those looking on.
Making their way down the strip were police cruisers and fire engines from various local departments and stations. Also featured in the parade were marching bands from Bradford Area High School and Fretz Middle School. Many participants in the parade tossed candy to children with an ambitious sweet tooth.
After the parade concluded, many stuck around for a service at Veterans Square. During the service, several veterans spoke and gave praise to those who served in the armed forces while noting the importance of carrying on the values of honoring those who have preserved our freedom.Staff Sgt. Steven Kloss read General Logan’s Order after offering some history about Logan –– explaining that Logan is often recognized as the founder of Memorial Day.
VFW Post 212’s Jim Long gave the Memorial Day address.
“Last week when I came to prepare mentally, as I was reading the memorials, I came to realize that I knew everyone on the memorial — or at least their families,” Long said in his speech. “I’m certain that many of you with grey hair like mine have probably had the same sentiment.”
At the end of the service, a 21-gun salute was performed and Bradford Marching Owls Spencer Whittemore performed TAPS. After the conclusion of the service at Veterans Square, 2019 Miss Poppy Saleh Stavish tossed a wreath into the water off the Mechanic Street bridge to honor those lost at sea.
