SMETHPORT — A Bradford woman who was convicted by a jury in February of sexually assaulting a teen will serve six to 12 years in state prison.
Angel L. Fenton, 26, was sentenced Thursday in McKean County Court before President Judge John Pavlock.
Fenton has credit for 293 days of time served. She now must register as a sex offender for her lifetime, and she is not to have any contact with the victim or the victim’s family.
In addition, Fenton must pay $736 for the cost of law enforcement officials having to retrieve her from Greene County. Assistant District Attorney Jerry Grill explained that on the day of trial, Fenton ran away before the verdict was in, and she had to be brought back from Greene County.
On Feb. 4, a jury found Fenton guilty of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of a person less than 16 years old, sexual assault, indecent assault of a person less than 16 years old and corruption of minors.
Court records filed at the time of Fenton’s arrest indicated that she provided a 14-year-old girl with pills, then asked the teen to watch Fenton’s children.
When Fenton returned, she sexually assaulted the girl, court records indicated.
In his comments to Pavlock prior to sentencing, Grill talked about the “irrevocable damage the individual did to this minor child. We would ask you to sentence her accordingly.”
Fenton’s attorney, Public defender Phil Clabaugh, argued that Fenton should not receive an additional sentence at the sexual assault count “based on statutory language.”
In Pennsylvania’s sentencing guidelines, some charges will merge at the time of sentencing and preclude the judge from ordering separate sentences at the merged charges.
Pavlock did order a sentence on the sexual assault charge, but structured it so she would serve the sentence concurrent to — or at the same time as — sentences at other counts.
Fenton declined to comment on her own behalf.
