Coudersport, O-E split NAL softball crown

COUDERSPORT — The Coudersport offense was firing on all cylinders during Friday’s Northern Allegheny League doubleheader sweep of Port Allegany.

The Lady Falcons (15-4, 12-2) racked up 13 runs in the first game en route to a 13-3 win before posting a gaudy 26 runs in a 26-9 win in the nightcap to secure a share of the NAL title with Otto-Eldred.

In game one, Shaelyn Black pitched all five innings and gave up three runs on five hits and fanned 13 batters.

She added a 1-for-2 performance at the plate that included two RBI. Paiton Whipple added two RBI on a 3-for-4 performance and Addie Myers went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Cailey Barnett went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Port A (6-10, 5-8), and Tori Tanner went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

In game two, Coudy posted 11 runs in the third inning and eight in the sixth as part of a 26-run outburst.

Black led the charge with a 3-for-4 performance with five RBI, and Whipple went 4-for-5 with four RBI. Claudia Miller added four RBI on a 2-for-3 performance, and Myers went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

“The girls started really hitting the ball there in the second game. There were some walks, but we pounded the ball hard,” Coudersport coach Trevor Saulter said. “I’m really pleased with how we started hitting there in the second game. We had 18 hits.”

The Lady Gators picked up a 3-for-4 performance from Jenna Sprankle, who posted a pair of RBI. Jade Evens went 2-for-2, and Barnett went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

The Lady Falcons enter the District 9 1A softball tournament as the 4-seed, and host DuBois Central Catholic on Tuesday. The winner of that game faces 1-seed Otto-Eldred on Thursday.

    Otto-Eldred 15, Oswayo Valley 0, 4 innings

SHINGLEHOUSE — Otto-Eldred put up eight runs in the top of the first inning and then never looked back en route to a 15-0 win at Oswayo Valley in Northern Allegheny League play.

The Lady Terrors (17-2, 12-2) plated their 15 runs on 12 hits, and capitalized on five OV (4-11, 4-9) errors on the day.

Emmalee Sheeler went 1-for-2 with two RBI and scored twice for O-E, and Autumn Smith plated three RBI on a 2-for-3 day that included a double. Haylee Frederick added a 2-for-4 day with one RBI, as did Gabrielle Nickerson.

In the circle, Abby Wolfe pitched a shutout and gave up just three hits. She fanned two batters on the day.

Oswayo Valley’s three hits came on the bats of Macy West, who went 2-for-2, and Laya Phillips, who went 1-for-1.

West pitched for OV and gave up 11 runs on six hits, struck out three and walked seven.

The loss concludes the year for Oswayo Valley. Otto-Eldred is the 1-seed in the District 9 Tournament, and earned a first round bye. The Lady Terrors, who are co-champions of the NAL with Coudersport, will play the winner of No. 5 DuBois Central Catholic at No. 4 Coudy in the semifinals on Thursday, May 23.

    Northern Potter 12, Smethport 2, 5 innings

ULYSSES — Smethport held a 2-0 lead through two and a half innings before Northern Potter roared back with 12 unanswered runs over the game’s final three innings to top the Lady Hubbers, 12-2, in Northern Allegheny League action Friday.

Smethport (0-17, 0-14) picked up a pair of unearned runs in the early stages of the game, before the Lady Panthers (5-8, 5-7) scored 12 runs, keyed by a seven-run fourth inning.

Emma Kosa tripled and had five RBI for NoPo, and starting pitcher Megan Hyde turned in a two-hit performance that also featured seven strikeouts and just three walks.

Sam Tanner took the loss in the circle and gave up six hits and six walks, and had no strikeouts. Baylea Strom and Tanner each had one hit to give Smethport its two-hit total.

This was each team’s final game of the year.

    Elk Catholic 18, Bradford 6, 5 innings

ST. MARYS — Despite scoring its most runs in seven games, the Lady Owls were done in by six errors in a season-ending defeat to Elk Catholic.

Bradford (2-15) struck for two runs in the top of the first and added two more in the second before the Lady Crusaders exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning to pull away.

Elk Catholic had 17 hits in the game, including a 4-for-4 outing from Sady VanAlstine and three each from R. Nero and E. Fledderman. Nero had a team-high three RBI.

Bradford’s Emily Warner took the loss in the circle despite just eight of her 18 runs given up being earned.

Warner also paced the Lady Owls at the plate with two hits and three RBI. Teammate Alyssa Hardy added two singles.

Elk CC hosts A-C Valley in the first round of the District 9 Class A playoffs next Tuesday.
