Putting the “fun” back in “funeral” –– that’s the motive behind New Jersey writer Pab Sungenis’ play titled “Mourning Has Broken,” which is set to present its first show today at 7:30 p.m. at Togi’s Playhouse.
Bradford Little Theatre producer David Merwine said that although the setting is primarily at funerals, the play is a comedy.
“The play is about six friends who come together for three funerals in rapid succession,” he said. “The group has sort of drifted apart over the years and at the funeral they discuss the fact that they thought they would never be the kind of friends who only get together at funerals. They all swear that they are going to get together and see each other soon, and next thing you know here we are, they are back again.”
The cast comprises a mix of veteran actors, such as Barry Fitzgerald as Barry, and relative newcomers, such as Tony Vinca as Jeff, Roy Collins II as Don and Cassie Buck as Amy. Making her BLT debut is Patti Lewis as Gabrielle.
In addition to directing, Sungenis will play the youngest of the friends, Tommy.
Candy Tingley plays Fran, a semi-professional mourner. Merwine plays the funeral home’s minister, and Eliana Lewis provides vocal accompaniment.
Merwine added that he and Sungenis were cast to take part in the play; Sungenis explained he doesn’t normally appear in his own programs but said he couldn’t be happier with the lineup –– calling them a “wonderful cast.”
“Mourning Has Broken” will take place at Togi’s Playhouse on at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. They can be purchased at Graham Florist, Togi’s Family Restaurant or by calling Marcia at (814) 598-1101.
