Sixth grade students Joyce Loncki, Tekla Loncki and Chloe Lewis completed a 50 states project at the Bradford Area Christian Academy researching each state’s official bird, flower, tree and fun facts about the state. The Pennsylvania House voted 191-6 last week to grant the honor of the state amphibian to the Eastern hellbender, which can grow to be more than 2 feet long and is battling declining numbers. Other state symbols include the firefly as state insect; the Piper J-3 Cub, which has Bradford connections, as state aircraft; the trilobite, an Upper Devonian fossil which can still be found in the Bradford area, as the state fossil; and the Slinky as the state toy. After researching all 50 states, the students came away with many interesting facts and stories about all the 50 states, including “The Keystone State.”
