SMETHPORT – Marissa Jack, a District 9 qualifier in the discus – ninth place in 2018 – leads a group of returning letter winners for the Smethport Lady Hubbers track and field team this season.
One of three senior returnees, Jack holds the school record in the discus. She also competes in the shotput and javelin. The other two are Victoria Gamet in the distance events and hurdles and Mattelle Neely in the discus javelin and long jump.
Other letter winners are juniors Erin Herzog (shot put, discus and javelin), Alexis Shall (jumps, sprints and shotput) and Sarah Murray, (sprints. jumps). Rounding out this group are sophomores Chloe Costa (sprints, jumps), Cadence Gamet (hurdles, sprints) and Haley Snyder (sprints, jumps).
“We are looking at other new team members, freshmen and juniors, who can add depth and team points,” said head coach Rick Woodring, now in his 29th season.
Some of those depth contributors that Woodring will be leaning on are: Delanie DiFonzo (shot put, discus, javelin) and Heather Lawrence (discus, javelin, jumps) as well as freshmen Jenna Gregory and Emily Miller (middle, long distances), Emily Olsen and Serena Smyntek (shot put, javelin, discus, sprints) and Emalee Robson (shot put, discus, javelin).
Pointing to the small squad of 16 girls, Woodring said, “We are young and low in numbers, but big in heart and are hard workers. Our coaches are looking for a competitive and successful season, hoping to improve on last year’s 4-7 season.”
Woodring’s assistant coaches are Bill Stephen, Sarah Cheatle, Holli Gregory and Max Simms,
