FRANKLIN — The best season in Kane girls basketball history is now over.
The Lady Wolves, winners of 20 straight games coming in, finally met its match in the PIAA quarterfinals on Friday night with a 61-31 defeat to District 10’s West Middlesex at Franklin High School.
Kane looked to be up to the task of a talented Big Reds squad in the first quarter, trailing by just one, 15-14, after eight minutes.
But West Middlesex held Kane to just six points in the second frame and exploded for 19 points of its own to take a commanding 36-20 halftime lead.
The Big Reds expanded that by outscoring Kane 25-11 in the second half. The Lady Wolves were held to just three combined field goals in the second and third quarters and unofficially had at least 25 turnovers in the game.
Carlie Beatty and Karsyn Rupert had 15 points each for WM, while MaKennah White (12) and freshman Emily Anthony (11) were also in double figures.
The Big Reds, winners of three consecutive D-10, will face Everett in the Class AA semifinals on Monday night.
Kane’s Ella Marconi was held to just 12 points in the game. Including just four in the second half.
It was the final high school game for Marconi and fellow senior Hannah Buhl (nine points on Friday) in a very successful four-year career.
The two Lady Wolves helped Kane to three consecutive District 9 Class AA appearances, including the school’s first District title this year with a win over A-C Valley.
