O-E, Coudy girls bow out in PIAA first round

NEW CASTLE — A double dose of 27 points from Alexis Robison and 22 from Rochester’s Corynne Hauser were too much for Otto-Eldred to overcome in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Saturday at New Castle High School.

The Lady Terrors had the tall task of battling Rochester (20-6), which was fresh off of winning the WPIAL title.

Otto-Eldred (15-11) kept pace with the hot shooting Lady Rams for a quarter, only trailing 24-15 after one.

But Rochester flexed its muscle in the second frame, outscoring the Lady Terrors 18-9 to pull away.

“We just played a really good team, a number one seed,” O-E head coach Shawn Gray said. ‘We had a good game plan and the girls executed it for the most part, but we just gave up way too many open looks and layups in the second quarter to get down by 18 at the half.”

Bethany Barto (11 points) was also in double figures for the Rams, which have scored over 65 points in four straight contests.

“The kids played harder and more together than they had at any point this year,” Gray said.

“Real encouraging sign especially that the young kids went in and played awesome. I had an all-sophomore lineup out there for awhile.”

One of those sophomores, Reilly Raught hauled in 10 rebounds and had five points for O-E, while junior Jade Spinney had a team-high 12 points.

The loss concluded what was another successful year for the Lady Terrors — the first for Gray behind the bench — despite losing their entire starting lineup from the season before.

“I couldn’t be prouder with the kids and how they took on this year with the changes we made,” he said. “Definitely had some ups and downs…kind of limped in but that extra few weeks of practice we had was invaluable for us.

“The future is bright at Otto Eldred.”

JOHNSTOWN — A balanced scoring attack and some stifling defense from Shanksville-Stonycreek ended Coudersport’s season in the opening round of the PIAA Class A playoffs on the campus of Pitt-Johnstown Saturday.

Sidney Stutzman and Rylee Snyder each had 11 points to lead the scoring surge for the Lady Vikings, which relied on a 17-point second quarter to pull away.

Coudersport, meanwhile, struggled to do much of anything offensively, netting just one bucket in the first quarter and failing to hit a 3-pointer all game.

Shaelyn Black scored 15 points for the Lady Falcons. No other Coudy player had more than four.

Shanksville-Stonycreek will face Rochester in the second round of the PIAA playoffs Wednesday.
