Residents of McKean County are no strangers to snow.
On Saturday and Sunday, Winter Storm Harper reinforced that statement –– bringing an average snowfall of 12 inches throughout the county, according to the National Weather Service.
The NWS’s Kevin Fitzgerald, stationed in State College, gave a few areas of reference for snowfall –– noting that Eldred received 12 inches, Kane received 10 inches, and 9 inches of snow was reported about 4 miles west of Bradford.
As for cold temperatures and wind chills, they will remain until Tuesday.
“The coldest will be (today). (Tonight) will be pretty cold too,” said Fitzgerald. “Then it will moderate pretty quickly, actually.”
He added that today will also be “bitter cold” and said high temperatures are expected to be in the single digits.
Fitzgerald said, “(Tonight), the wind will die out but it will be just as cold, probably 5-10 degrees below zero, then the moderation kicks in.”
The weekend storm caused state officials to put temporary traffic changes in place to keep motorists safe.
On Saturday evening, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced a reduced speed limit of 45 mph on U.S. Route 219 in McKean and Elk counties, along with reduced speeds on other highways in surrounding counties.
Speed limits were restored on Route 219 by Sunday morning. By 1 p.m. Sunday, normal speed limits were restored to all roads in the region. Bans that were in place on commercial vehicle traffic during the storms were removed by 11 a.m. Sunday.
