Brookville boys defeat Bradford; Coudersport, Elk Catholic notch Friday wins

BROOKVILLE — The final score was Brookville 54-49, but it was Bradford’s game for the taking and the Owls just couldn‘t quite pull it off Friday night.

At the end of the first quarter the score was tied 9-9, at halftime it was deadlocked 23-23 and after three periods the scoreboard showed a 35-35 tie heading into the final stanza.

In those final eight minutes, the visiting Owls hung with the Raiders in the early going, but fell behind on Baughman’s three-pointer and wound up on the short end of the score for the sixth time this season.

“It came down to a few miscues in the fourth,” said Bradford coach Brian Hobbs. “It went back and forth. Then they went up by three on Baughman’s ‘3’ with about 2 ½ left and we just could not dig it out it.

“It was tied at halftime despite nine turnovers and we played them even through three quarters.

We had a couple opportunities for steals and didn’t get them. We also didn’t convert in the half court and gave up 10 offensive rebounds in the game. That really hurt us.

“We have to take better care of the ball,” Hobbs emphasized.

Tyler Gigliotti led the Owls offensively with 24 points, while Gavin Babcock added 15.

Away from the ball, Gigliotti also had four assists and three steals, while Donny Pattison pulled down six rebounds.

The Raiders spread their scoring around led by Logan Byerly with 12, David Cable with 11 and Trenton Gilhousen with 10.

Bradford, 5-6 overall, hosts DuBois on Wednesday.

Elk Catholic 45, St. Marys 35

ST. MARYS — Alex Briendel scored 10 points to lead Elk County Catholic to a 45-35 win over St. Marys Friday.

“I thought we had a great defensive effort in the first half. I thought we played hard throughout the game,” said Aaron Straub, ECC coach. “St. Marys made an excellent run in the first 3 minutes of the 4th quarter to cut the lead from 12 to 2. We were in too much of a hurry on offense and quick missed shots. We gave the ball right back to St. Marys, who capitalized and made some quick hoops. St.Marys played hard.”

Leading St.Marys offensively was Cahil Parrish with 10 points.

ECC used a 22-12 advantage at the half to stay ahead of St.Marys, despite the fact both teams scored 23 points in the second half.

“Bottom line is, this was an excellent win.  We stayed together as a team and closed the game on a nice run,” Straub said. “Three-game weeks are demanding, especially during finals.  We played three games in four days. I am proud of our effort.”

Straub noted the team does have some areas to focus on in the near future.

“We need to clean some defensive things up, especially covering down to the block,” he said. “We will make those changes and get better”.

“We started out really aggressive and got 11 offensive rebounds in the first half,” said Smethport coach Jay Acker. “We only had six turnovers in the game and I’ll take that any day.”

The Hubbers pushed their lead to 27 by the end of the third quarter and were well on the way to squaring their overall record at 5-5.
