Thunderstorms in January –– who would’ve thought?
On Tuesday, the region experienced heavy rain, gusty wind, thunderstorms, and even some pea-sized hail that gave Bradford a deja vu of autumn weather. But the rain storms the area experienced on Tuesday are projected to turn into snow storms soon.
AccuWeather stated that a wintry mix could wreak havoc across portions of the Ohio Valley, South and Northeast.
“There are actually two centers associated with the storm,” according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson.
According to the release, one center is forecasted to drop in from central Canada and cross the Great Lakes and New England. The other center will likely move northeast from the Gulf of Mexico.
“If the two storms remain weak, they are more likely to remain separated, but with at least spotty snow and ice that extends from the Ohio Valley to the interior South and grazes the mid-Atlantic region,” Anderson said. “However, if the two storms phase or merge together and become one big storm, a swath of heavy snow and ice may extend from the Ohio Valley to the central Appalachians, part of the mid-Atlantic and much of New England.”
Those with plans to travel should do so with caution as highways are expected grow more slippery as the inclement weather sets in. Some of the highways expected to be impacted includes sections of the interstates 81, 85, 77, 70, 68 and 64.
According to AccuWeather, the region may see up to a foot of lake-effect snow.
