Visiting Oswayo Valley took advantage of Bradford’s lack of numbers to hand the Owls a 36-29 setback in their Allegheny Mountain Wrestling League match on Thursday.
There were no matches in three weight classes and the Green Wave won six of the 11 weights where wrestlers took the mat. Three Wave matmen earned 18 team points via forfeits.
Leading OV with pins were Gage Aldrich at 132, Isaiah Barney at 145 and Michael Vandergrift at heavyweight.
“We knew we were going to give up a bunch of points, but we actually got some of them back,” said Bradford (0-2) coach Jamey Miller. “We told our kids to try some different things and they did. They performed, but it’s tough to compete with all the forfeits.”
The Owls made it a match with back-to-back pins from Colby Keane (160) and Derek Sunafrank (170) and wins by forfeit at 182 and 195. Brett Thompson also helped close the gap with a tech fall at 126.
“The draw weight where we started the match hurt us, too,” stated Miller adding that, “Dillon Keane (182) is unbeaten at 12-0 and Thompson, a 138-pound freshman, has just two losses.”
Bradford’s honorary captain and team manager Jacob Meister, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was given a chance to get on the mat in an exhibition match and came away with a win.
“Dillon Keane suggested it and volunteered to wrestle Jacob,” stated Miller. “Jacob knows some wrestling moves but is limited physically.”
Bradford will be back in action Tuesday, hosting DuBois.
