CARE: The McKean County Department of Emergency Services is reminding residents this holiday season to “Candle with Care.”
Local emergency officials are sharing the National Fire Protection Association’s brochure on candle safety.
December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. More than one-third of home candle fires start in the bedroom, and two of every five candle fires start when things that can burn are too close to the candle.
“Remember a candle is an open flame, which means that it can easily ignite anything that can burn,” the association cautioned.
•Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
•Keep candles at least one foot away from anything that can burn.
If you do burn candles, make sure you use sturdy candle holders that won’t easily tip. Put the candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface. Light candles carefully, keeping hair and clothing away from the flame.
So more tips: Don’t burn a candle all the way down.
*Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
*Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles.
PARTY: There are plenty of holiday get-togethers happening this time of year, and we want to remind folks to use common sense with alcohol consumption, and never drink and drive.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board recommends hosts staying sober to monitor guests’ sobriety, to have a good amount and variety of food on hand, and to offer a variety of non-alcoholic drinks.
Arrange designated drivers, or consider having guests stay overnight.
Every day in the U.S., 28 people die in alcohol-related crashes. Be responsible.
