McKean County veterans have a new set of wheels at their disposal, owing to a local group that raises funds each year on the transportation program’s behalf.
The Willow Creek Triathlon provides a way for people in the area to test their physical dexterity, while knowing that their participation will benefit the Disabled American Veterans Transportation Network of McKean County.
Volunteers use the DAV van to transport veterans to medical appointments across the region. When the van’s not in use, residents can see it parked in the lot of the U.S. Post Office on Boylston Street.
“DAV transportation drivers are extremely appreciative of the Triathlon annual event which has been a fundraiser to purchase a new vehicle to enable transportation for the Bradford area Disabled American Vets and veterans to their doctor appointments,” said Judy LeRoy, DAV transportation coordinator.
“Current drivers include Scott Bloomgren, Jerry Givan, Judy LeRoy, Steve Longnecker and David Paul,” she added.
For those drivers, transporting veterans gives them a chance to serve the people who at one time served the country.
“We feel privileged to be able to transport these vets,” LeRoy said. “All veterans are pillars of world peace. They are the men and women who provided stability and support not only for America, but countries worldwide and still carry on this self-giving commitment to this day.”
More volunteers are always appreciated.
“The DAV Transportation System is constantly looking for volunteer drivers,” explained LeRoy. “A commitment to one day a week or month would be of great help. If interested call
800-460-2327 or contact one of the drivers listed above.”
LeRoy again expressed her gratitude to those involved with the Willow Creek Triathlon, which she noted is held each August. It’s not just the organizers of the triathlon, but also all of its supporters, donors and participants who make it possible.
