The Erie Diocese has released a few additional names of priests and lay teachers accused of sexual abuse, and two of the four have local connections.
According to the report released Thursday, both with local connections are deceased.
The names included Monsignor Joseph Reszkowski, who had pastored at St. Bernard Church in Bradford, and lay teacher and former Elk County Catholic High School football coach David Geitner. This is not the Bradford man of the same name; there is no relation.
Elk County Catholic has an annual award for excellence in sports and sportsmanship called the “Dave Geitner Memorial Award.”
The other names released were Father Raymond Balko, OSB, and former lay teacher James Hewitt.
The diocese did not release information on the allegations against the men, saying only that Reszkowski is under investigation, and the others had credible accusations against them.
The statewide investigative grand jury released a list in August of 41 people in the Erie Diocese with allegations against them.
Those names included the following: David Lynch, Samuel Slocum, Robert Hannon, Joseph Jerge, William Presley, Giles Nealen, David Poulson, Salvatore Luzzi, Michael Amy, Jan Olowin, Chester Gawronski, Donald Cooper, Herbert Gloekler, Stephen Jeselnick and John Philip Schanz.
Others have included Denise Geitner Myers, a lay teacher in the Elk County Catholic school system, and Msgr. Daniel Martin, who had pastored to St. Boniface Parish in Kersey and was headmaster of Elk County Christian until 1970.
A six-year investigation by the diocese, which ended when the state attorney general’s office subpoenaed records in 2016, found abuse claims dating back to 1944, Bishop Lawrence Persico said when he released the first list of names in April.
In a statement released Thursday, the diocese pledged to investigate — “in collaboration with its independent investigators at the Pittsburgh-based K&L Gates law firm — all allegations brought forth.”
