Bradford girls split with St. Marys, Kane

The Bradford Lady Owls cross country team split a pair of dual meets with St. Marys and Kane on a very hot Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Owls fell to St. Marys 21-40 but picked up a win over Kane 25-30.

“It was a very hot day to run which did have an effect on the times,” Bradford coach Mark Kelley said.

Hannah Lary led the way with a fifth place finish in 23:22.

“Hannah was coming off a hard race on Saturday and was probably a little sore from that race,” Kelley said. “But she ran well and will be ready to go next Tuesday.”

Bethany Bednez was sixth in 23:37.

“Bethany looked very comfortable running in the heat. She is an experienced runner, so she knows how to pace herself in those conditions.”

Alex Safran was 13th in 30:27, Bri Keller was 14th in 31:42, and Haleigh Reid was 15th in 32:03.

“I think the heat affected these three a little bit and they were off pace from where they usually are.
“St. Marys and Kane have some very talented runners and I knew we were in for a race. St. Marys is the two-time defending district champions and pack very well. We have a week to improve from this race.”
The Lady Owls junior high team improved to 2-0 with 15-50 victories over Kane and St. Marys. Korie Dixon was first overall in 11:47, Elisa Hayden was second in 12:24, Aubrey Cruz was third in 12:38, Sophie Cornelius was fourth in 13:46, Leila Bines was fifth in 14:00, Kali O’Neill was sixth in 14:50, Mallory Whitlow was seventh in 14:56, Brynn Haviland was eighth in 16:07, Treyna Allen was ninth in 16:39, Kiera Cleveland was 11th in 18:25 and Kaylee Dennison was 12th in 18:57.

“All of these girls ran very well given the heat. Many of them improved significantly from our time trial a few weeks ago on this course. Sophie (2:10), Brynn (3:00), Kali (1:51) and Leila (:44) improved the most. Two races in four days is a tough stretch especially for these girls that are new to the sport.”
The Lady Owls are off until next Tuesday when they travel to Brockway to compete against Brockway and Dubois.
