Hubbers rally to top Clarion-Limestone; Otto, Port A fall

SMETHPORT — Smethport’s Grant Ognen and Blake Kinner keyed a fourth quarter rally that led the unbeaten Hubbers to a 28-18 victory over Clarion-Limestone Friday night in District 9 League small school division football action.

Trailing 18-14 early in the final period, Ognen found Nathan Hollowell open for a 17-yard touchdown pass and then Kinner scampered 20 yards to paydirt following a Braedon Johnson interception. Noah Costa applied the finishing touches with a pair of kicked extra points for the final 10-point win.

“For the past two years we’ve talked to the kids about overcoming adversity in games and tonight it happened for us,” said Smethport coach Adam Jack. ”We took the 14-0 lead and then C-L battled back to take the lead. Our kids responded in the fourth to get the victory.

“I’m proud of them,” he added.

Smethport took control of the game early on Logan Christie’s 32-yard interception return. Ognen found Alex Sanderson open for the PAT and an 8-0 lead.

In the second quarter Ognen went to the air hooking up with Bryent Johnson for 26 yards and six points to give the Hubbers a 14-0 advantage.

The Lions stormed back with two scores, one a short run by Austin Newcome, to make it 14-12 at halftime.

Defense dominated a scoreless third quarter and then Newcome gave C-L the lead, 18-14, on a one yard run to set the stage for the Hubbers rally.

Smethport (2-0) hosts Port Allegany next Friday night.
