The number 13 turned out lucky for area veterans as the Willow Creek Triathlon surpassed last year’s donation by more than $950.
This year’s triathlon, which also includes a duathlon, was held Saturday. As a result of this year’s event, a total of $44,108.32 was given to the Disabled American Veterans of McKean and Warren counties.
The money is earmarked to help veterans get to medical appointments.
To date, more than $322,000 has been raised by the triathlon in its 13 years in existence.
Race Director Gregg Reynolds continues to be amazed and grateful for the community’s support.
“Our committee appreciates all the participants and the community have done to make our event a success,” Reynolds said. “Whether it is taking part in the triathlon or duathlon or donating money – you are an important part of our success. For that, we thank you as well as our veterans thank you.”
Todd Willis of Franklin placed first in the triathlon portion with a time of 1:02:34. Cheryl Burns of Jamestown, New York, was the top female with a time of 1:11:43.
Willis and Burns were awarded the Master Sgt. Thom Maholic Award, a knife by W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery.
Maholic, 38, of Bradford, died June 26, 2006, in Ghecko, Afghanistan.
The event also included honoring Gold Star families and veterans.
