The Bradford City Water Authority on Monday fixed a water leak that caused road damage on Davis Street.
The leak was fixed by afternoon — much sooner than the 12-hour repair the authority had anticipated, said Steve Disney, the authority’s executive director. However, damage to Davis Street from the leak will need to be repaired soon, he noted.
“We were notified of about 10:39 this morning of a possible water break on Davis Street,” he said Monday, adding that crews were immediately dispatched to the scene.
According to Disney, once the crew was mobilized, workers were “able to get a good, efficient shutdown.”
“A large section of roadway on Davis Street right in front of the CVS Pharmacy basically heaved up from water pressure,” he said.
Disney indicated that the road damage helped the crew find the leak quickly, as workers used correlating equipment at the damaged spot.
“Our crew was able to do some correlating and they pinpointed the exact location on Davis Street where the leak was,” he explained.
During the repairs, several businesses but no homes were without water, including the Hotel Holley, CVS, the Bender Clinic of Chiropractic/United Way of Bradford building and the Dollar General. Water service was restored about 3:30 p.m., said Disney.
“Since there was a good, efficient shutdown, there’s no mandatory boil water (advisory) required,” he said.
“We don’t know the exact cause of the break,” Disney said. “We didn’t see any evidence of damage of the main; something must have damaged it over time.”
He noted that the leak was in an 8-inch ductile iron main that was installed 1972.
The main is fixed, but “the road is still going to have to be repaired,” he said.
The “extensive repairs” that will be done — probably next week by an authority contractor — will include a section at least 50-feet in length that goes across the entire width of the road, he said. That section will be excavated, then a new subbase and new asphalt will be put in.
In the meantime, the road is open.
