The long running annual Penn Brad Derrick Day is to be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Penn Brad Oil Museum at 901 South Ave.
Admission this year is free.
In fact, according to Chairperson Bev Roberts, this year’s festivities are “not a fundraiser but more about awareness and education; which is why we will only be charging a small fee, only for lunch foods.”
This year’s events contain a vast array of activities to interest the youngest of patrons to the eldest. The Penn Brad Museum will be fully operational with historical and educational videos playing in the theater as well as discounts at the gift shop.
There will be food available as well as refreshments and snow cones throughout the event.
Some of the showcases include displays of antique oilfield engines and equipment, as well as a special Nitro Glycerine Display. A professional will be demonstrating the operation of a Spudding rig and there will also be a demonstration on a Pulling rig. There will also be workshops for candle making and quilting. There will also be special raffles for specific items which will be on display.
As well as displays for older children to the elderly, there will be a special area, which according to Roberts, will be a step back in time for children’s games.
“We will have things such as hula hoops, hopscotch, sack races, as well as some other old fashioned games, where small prizes will be given to participants,” she explained.
This year’s event is being held earlier than it has in past years when it was planned the same day as the Italian Festival in downtown Bradford. But Roberts doesn’t seem to think the change will affect patronage as she stated that “the museum’s popularity is gaining momentum. Just this past month the museum beat it’s personal best for the number of recorded visitors for the month — even bringing patrons from as far away as Germany.”
All workers at this year’s event are volunteering their time, including two local groups; the Fireside Pumpers and the Desk and Derrick group.
