More than two centuries after an event, it’s easy to lose track of what we’re celebrating. How would the nation’s Founding Fathers commemorate the 242nd birthday of the United States of America?
“July 4th ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion.”
These were the words of John Adams –– a signer of the Declaration of Independence and second U.S. president –– who called upon Americans to celebrate the nation’s commencement every Fourth of July, and if there is any country who knows how to have a party, it is certainly America.
Millions of people across the country will be traveling to spend time with friends and family, taking part in cookouts, concerts and fireworks.
One Bradford resident said that his favorite things to do on Independence Day are to “cook out, drink beer and watch fireworks.”
According to CNBC, 2018 is estimated to see over $7 billion spent on Independence Day celebrations with $6.9 billion being spent on cookouts, $1 billion spent on beer and $800 million to be spent on fireworks.
Ed Wright of Wright’s Music Shed said his favorite ways to celebrate the holiday including watching fireworks from his daughter’s backyard and attending family picnics.
This Fourth of July marks America’s 242nd birthday, 242 years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The Declaration includes signatures from 56 delegates –– including Pennsylvania’s very own Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin.
