A New Jersey man will bring a message to youth in Bradford next week on the dangers of drugs, gang involvement and associated criminal activity.
Michael DeLeon, founder of Steered Straight Inc., will present the Back to the Classroom series at Grace Lutheran Life Center at 79 Mechanic St. from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday.
“This is a custom adaptation of several evidence-based interventions,” officials said in a prepared statement. “The series brings the components of the assembly back to the classroom and has several calendared components that continue to deliver the message throughout the year. The motivational presentation is the first module. The other six modules create a scheduled continuum of care.”
Through Steered Straight, a nonprofit organization formed in 2000, Deleon has reached more than five million students and thousands of adults in recovery facilities.
“Michael’s story resonates because his life was once entwined in drugs,” officials said. “He converted his personal road to recovery into a trail, blazed with the pertinent resources his audience needs to live better directed and more purposeful lives.”
Deleon is an award-winning filmmaker and has directed and produced four documentaries on addiction, focusing on the opiate and heroin epidemic in America, marijuana legalization and Addiction Recovery.
