BLACK & WHITE: Readers probably noticed that Tuesday’s front page was less colorful than usual.
(That’s a reference to the ink, not a comment on our content.)
We are having mechanical issues with our press. That’s why today’s B section is black and white.
COLD CASE: It was 80 years ago on Mother’s Day that a missing 4-year-old girl prompted thousands to take to the woods south of Marshburg to look for the girl.
On May 8, 1938, Marjorie West was picking flowers with her sister at a family picnic site in the area and never returned. To this day, she has not been found and no one knows what happened to her.
According to The Era, volunteers scoured the Allegheny National Forest in search of Marjorie. Lewis Mallory III and Joseph Fields flew private planes over the area, too.
The case received national attention, and police investigated several theories. For instance, did she fall in one of many abandoned wells in the area? There were several abduction theories — including one theory that she was picked up by a woman who kidnapped hundreds of children to sell to rich families.
Last week on May 8 — the anniversary of Marjorie’s disappearance — her story was told in great length on Narratively, a website that features the stories of ordinary people around the world. Narratively’s retelling can be found at narrative.ly/the-great-unsolved-mystery-of-missing-marjorie-west/
CONTACT: We’re not sure the origin of this celebration, but today is Wear Purple for Peace Day.
Before you rush to put your favorite violet pants on, know that the name is a little unclear: apparently it’s a day to invite peaceful visits from space aliens.
