POLICE WEEK: During the week of May 13 through 19 — National Police Week — we are remembering people who put their own lives in danger to protect members of their communities.
As District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer states, “This week in May was first designated National Police Week by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The week is dedicated to honoring the memory of those officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
“In McKean County, we are privileged to be protected by our law enforcement — Bradford City Police, Bradford Township Police, Foster Township Police, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Police, Otto Eldred Regional Police, Smethport Borough Police, Port Allegany Police, Kane Borough Police, Sheriff’s Department, Game Commission, Pennsylvania State Police, McKean County Detectives’ Bureau and McKean County Drug Task Force.
“Every day, our officers and their families make sacrifices the rest of us can never truly appreciate. It has been said that heroes are easily recognized because they are the ones running toward the danger while the rest of us run away from it. This sentiment is a fitting description of law enforcement officers every day.
“In McKean County, the names of Patrolman Steven Jerman and Sergeant David Distrola are synonymous with heroic sacrifice. These men made the ultimate sacrifice and we will forever be grateful to them.
“The legacy of both men lives on in our community and will remain in a place of respect and honor.”
