Early runs cost Owls in loss to Clearfield

CLEARFIELD — Six runs in the first two innings by Clearfield were enough to allow the Bison to cruise to a 10-3 victory over Bradford on Friday.

Seth Bumbarger came up with the key hit for Clearfield (5-1), knocking bases-clearing double in the second inning that broke the game open.

The Bison’s eight base hits came from seven different players, with Bumbarger the only one who registered more than one.

Dan Manion was among the lone bright spots on offense for Bradford as he registered two RBI doubles. Meanwhile, Tyler Gigliotti notched two infield singles.

Manion, Adam Boyer, and Drew Piganelli combined for three strikeouts, nine walks, and eight hits on the mound for Bradford.

Playing in only their fourth game this season, the loss dropped the Owls to 1-3 on the year.

“We’ve gotten off to a rough start,” BHS coach Andy Carlson said. “I do feel like we’re a good baseball team, but we just haven’t shown it yet. We’re not making enough plays, we’re not hitting the ball, we’re striking out a lot. I feel like we can still be a good team but we’ve got to show it.”

Bradford will travel to face Cameron County this afternoon.

COUDERSPORT — Coudersport improved to 6-0 with a pair of 3-inning wins over Galeton in boys’ non-league baseball action on Friday.

In the opener, the Falcons used a nine-run second frame to hand the Tigers a 15-0 setback.

Hunter Redmond’s two-run single and Kolby VanWhy’s RBI base hit keyed the big frame.

Starter Josh Stevens picked up the mound win allowing no hits and recording five strikeouts in two innings of work. A.J. Redmond finished out the game.

Eli Ayers had the winners’ only extra base hit with an RBI double in the Falcons’ three-run first inning.

The losing pitcher for Galeton was Jake Cochran who surrendered seven of the winners’ 10 hits.

In the nightcap, the Falcons were the visitors and took control right from the start with a 10-run first inning on the way to a 16-0 triumph.

Sparking the breakout frame were Andrew Brown with a two-run single and Kullen Crosby with a run-scoring hit.

Crosby was also the winning pitcher, working just one inning as the starter. Elliott Hite and Derek Easton also worked one frame each. The trio allowed just two hits.

Hunter Crowell and Seth Succowich shared mound duties for Galeton and give up seven hits.

“It was nice to get out and play well considering the circumstances,” said Coudy coach Doug McClintic. “We didn’t mess around and just finished the games.”

Coudersport returns to action Tuesday at Cameron County.

EMPORIUM — The Red Raiders overcame a late deficit by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat ECC on Friday to improve to 3-3 on the season.

After Adam Shaffer brought in the tying run with an RBI single, Bryce Bauer was able to draw a bases-loaded walk to clinch the come-from-behind victory.

Shaffer led the way for Cameron County on the mound, going all seven innings and striking out seven while allowing just two walks and four hits. Shaffer also went 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI.

Adam Streich, meanwhile, went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for the Red Raiders.

“Apart from one inning Adam Shaffer was dominant on the mound,” Cameron County coach James Cooney said. “I’m glad we could give him some run support to get the win.”

Hunter Cashmer went 2-for-3 at the plate for ECC, while Will Uberti struck out 11 and walked two in five-plus innings of work on the mound.

Cameron County (3-3) will host Bradford this afternoon.

DUKE CENTER — Cole Sebastian drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Otto-Eldred its first win of the season, a 3-2 decision over Port Allegany in North Allegany League baseball action on Friday

Sebastian’s game-winning free pass came off Gators’ relief pitcher David Talkington with no outs. Talkington took over for starter Howie Stuckey who had loaded the bases on three walks.

Stuckey had held the Terrors pretty much in check with 15 strikeouts before getting into trouble in the final frame.

Sawyer Drummond and Chase Sebastian shared mound time for the winners, surrendering just two hits.

Drummond and Nick York belted doubles for the Terrors, while Jake Bell and Jake Merry each ripped an RBI single.

Talkington led the Gators at the plate with an RBI double.
