Owls track makes successful trip to Brookville

BROOKVILLE — After a weather-influenced hiatus, the Bradford track teams were finally able to get back in action on Wednesday as both the boys and girls triumphed over Brookville and DuBois Central Catholic.

The girls held off Brookville 87-61 while topping DCC 123.5-16.5.

Ashton McGriff led the way with a quadruple, earning wins in the 200, 1600 relay, 300 hurdles, and triple jump.

Emily Bosworth tripled in the 800, 1600, and the 1600 relay, while Regan Johnson (100, 1600 relay) and Hannah Lary (3200, 3200 relay) added doubles.

“It was nice to finally have a meet,” BHS coach Larry Stillman said. “Brookville has a very nice team and they pushed us hard, which we needed. The girls responded well. We shook off the rust, and once we got into it we responded very well.”

Stillman pointed to the Lady Owls’ sweep of the 800 as the turning point in the meet; Bosworth, Shea Crissman, and Logan Sunafrank went 1-2-3 in the event.

“Ashton and Regan looked good in the sprints,” Stillman added. “Ashton’s triple jump was excellent. Mikayla Bond jumped really well (high jump). Abby Coffman and Sophia Oliver came through in the throws.

“Hannah Lary and Mackenzie Lucas went 1-2 in the 3200, and that locked up the win for us.”

On the boys side, Bradford edged Brookville 82-68 and downed DCC 129-21.

Logan Caruso finished with a quadruple, winning the 800, 1600, 3200, and 3200 relay. Elsewhere, John Eakin won both the shot put and discus, earning personal bests in both. His toss of 58’ in the shot put was just three inches shy of the school’s oldest track and field record (58’3”).

Also earning doubles for Bradford were Tyler Kraft (1600 relay, 3200 relay), Vinnie Bizarro (1600 relay, 3200 relay), and Jaron Ambrose (1600 relay, 300 hurdles).

Several Owls recorded personal bests, including Ryan Whittemore (javelin), Matt Stafford (110 hurdles), Steve Kellam (long jump), and Bizarro (triple jump).

“The one thing that saved us today was Logan’s performance,” Owls coach Tom Tessena said. “Winning all those distance events, that’s hard to do. Our distance coach Mark Kelley did yeoman’s work today.

“We needed this meet,” Tessena added. “We got a bit out of shape not having any meets, but it got the guys to step up and do a nice job today. A lot of our younger guys had personal bests. Brookville was really tough in the jumps and sprints.”

Both Bradford teams will compete at the Kane Invitational on Saturday.
