Ten students from the Bradford Scholastic Chess program competed in the third annual scholastic chess championship held Saturday at Friendship (N.Y.) Central School.
Seven pupils participated in the elementary section: Gabe Wyant, Cooper Haight, Daniel Taylor, Kadyn Tessena, Trenton Johnson, Logan Wyant and Deidre Johnson.
Gabe Wyant took overall first place individual, finishing with five wins and no losses. Cooper Haight finished second, followed by Daniel Taylor in third. Kadyn Tessena finished fourth, and Trenton Johnson tied for fifth.
The elementary students competed against schools throughout the Southern Tier, including Portville, Hinsdale, Pioneer, Friendship and others.
The remaining three Bradford club chess aficionados played in the high school division: Tim Mulcahy, Peyton Haight and Matthew Wareham.
Tim Mulcahy (grade 8) finished clear fourth place with one loss, and Peyton Haight (grade 6) took fifth place. Matthew Wareham (grade 9), playing in his first tournament, tied for fifth place, finishing ahead of most of the high school students competing from schools throughout New York State. Topping the Jr.-Sr. High School division was Pioneer. Their players claimed the top three spots in the event.
The scholastic event was organized and supervised by Garry Reynolds, coach for Friendship Central School.
