O-E’s Close sets school records in javelin, long jump

DUKE CENTER — Despite losing a tri-meet against Allegany-Limestone and Portville on Thursday, it was a hugely successful day for Otto-Eldred’s Dylan Close, who broke not one but two school records.

Close first set the long jump record with a leap of 21’9 1/2”. Not much later, he set a new mark in the javelin with a throw of 171’2 1/2”.

Close finished with a quadruple on the day, adding victories in the pole vault and triple jump.

Jesse Bennett added a victory in the high jump for the Terrors.

On the girls side, Reilly Raught won the long jump, while Alexis Nickerson triumphed in the javelin.

    Port A, Johnsonburg split dual-meet

JOHNSONBURG — The Port Allegany boys track won in dramatic fashion over Johnsonburg on Thursday. With the scores knotted at 70 after all events were completed, the Gators won on a tiebreaker because they had won more events (9 to 8).

Bryce Baker led the way for Port A, as he tripled with victories in the 100, 200 and 400 events. Baker’s performance so far this season has already qualified him for four different events (100, 200, 400, 400 relay) in districts come May.

“I was very impressed with all of the boys,” Port Allegany coach Aaron Clark said. “There was a real good showing for us in our first nice weather meet. Bryce Baker had a whale of a meet for us tonight and it’s great that he is already qualified for districts this early.”

On the girls side, Johnsonburg almost came away with a clean sweep. The 3,200 relay team of Thomas, Stauffer, Caulkins and Archer won the only event for the Gators. Skylar Sherry tripled for the Rams, taking home victories in shot put, discus and javelin. Madeline Cowan doubled in the 100 and 200 for J-Burg.

Both the Port A boys and girls are set to compete in the Brookville Invitational on Saturday.

Smethport boys sweep, girls split with DCC, Eisenhower

SMETHPORT — The Smethport boys improved to 4-0 on the season thanks to a pair of big performances from Christian Tanner and Darian Gregory. Both boys earned quadruples, with Tanner winning the 400, 800, pole vault, and 1600 relay, and Gregory winning the 1,600 relay, 3,200 relay, 1,600, and 3,200.

Also doubling for the Hubbers were Brandon Peterson (high jump, javelin), Brayden Southard (shot put, discus), and Eric Szarowicz (1,600 relay, 3,200 relay).

“I was happy with the improvement we made,” Smethport coach Rick Woodring said. “Christian had a huge day in the 400 and pole vault, and Darian also had a big day running the distance events.

“Brandon and Brayden also had outstanding days.”

Noah Vokes quadrupled for DuBois CC with wins in the long jump, triple jump, 100, and 110 hurdles.

The Lady Hubbers (3-1), meanwhile, earned a split, defeating DCC while falling to Eisenhower.

Marissa Jack doubled for Smethport in the shot put and discus.

Delaney Nizzi quadrupled for DCC with wins in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 1,600 relay, and long jump.

Smethport will travel to Sheffield on Tuesday to face both the Wolverines and Port Allegany.
