Betty Pysher and Joan Piscitelli, members of the Zonta Club of Bradford, put together birthing kits to be sent to developing countries in hope of preventing complications that can arise during childbirth. The club assembled 250 kits Saturday at the Emanuel Lutheran Church on Seaward Avenue. Local birthing kits save lives globally in developing countries. A simple kit, small enough to fit into a ZipLock bag, can be enough to keep new mothers alive and healthy. The kit, which costs about $2 each, helps to prevent infection and complications that claim the lives of many women in childbirth. Each kit contains a square plastic sheet for the mother lie on, a piece of soap, a pair of gloves, umbilical tape, a scalpel or razor blade and gauze pads.
