Several people at venues in the Foster Township area of Bradford as well as Limestone, N.Y., commented Wednesday on President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol during a joint session of Congress.
While some people approached by The Era wouldn’t comment on the topic, either because they were unable to watch the address or chose not to watch it because they dislike the president, several shared their thoughts regarding the event. Here are their comments:
Shawn Wilcox, Marshburg — “It seemed like a pretty rah-rah speech — he took credit for things he did, and for things I’m not real sure he did,” Wilcox said. “I’m patriotic, I have voted since I was 18 and am in the NRA. What I didn’t really like was (Trump) couldn’t say anything to suit” any of the Democrats present at the event.
“It was just more negative” attitudes from the Democrats, Wilcox said.
Richard Manfour, Bradford — Manfour said he didn’t watch the address, but likes Trump and his accomplishments and is certain he delivered a good speech.
“I like (Trump) because he doesn’t have to steal anything … I trust him,” Manfour said in referring to Trump’s personal wealth as an international businessman. “My wife likes him, too.”
Michael Baker, Bradford — Baker said he didn’t have the opportunity to watch the address Tuesday, but planned to watch a recording of it later Wednesday.
“I’m a true supporter and I’m behind him all the way,” Baker said of the president. “I’m looking forward to getting home tonight so I can watch” the address.
Cindy (no last name provided), Salamanca — “It was a waste of time,” she said of the address. “In my mind, as I watched it (Trump sounded like) a snake oil salesman. He presented a lot of problems, but he didn’t have solutions.”
Andrew Wells, Bradford — Wells said he did not like the Democrats’ reaction to Trump’s speech during the event in that they didn’t stand for any of the comments made by the President during his speech, even those that touched on patriotism.
“Politics is politics, but if you’re going to come together, you’ve got to give a little,” Wells said.
“As far as I’m concerned (Trump) has done excellent.”
Pat Kaber, Bradford — “I think it was very positive and I enjoyed the speech,” Kaber said of the address. “I also think it was very well put together.”
