Manion’s double-double lifts Owls past DCC

DUBOIS — Dan Manion put up a double-double to help lead the Bradford boys to a come-from-behind 62-58 victory over DuBois Central Catholic on Wednesday.

Manion finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds, as Bradford rebounded from a 17-9 first-quarter deficit.

“He did a nice job,” Owls coach Brian Hobbs said of his senior forward. “He demanded the ball tonight. He played like a leader. He took control on the offensive end and hit a couple of jump shots.

“We just chipped away. We pressed a little bit on defense after we let some guys get loose early on. We started to get back on defense and protect the basket a little better. I thought we got to the rack a little bit more; we’d been settling for perimeter shots early on and they just weren’t falling.”

Tyler Gigliotti (13 points, four assists), Deondre Terwilliger (11 points, three steals), and Brice Whelan (six points, nine rebounds) all had solid games for the Owls.

Justin Miknis scored a game-high 27 points for the Cardinals.

Bradford (2-1) will visit Coudersport on Friday; the game will be the Falcons’ first of the season after Wednesday’s contest against St. Marys was postponed.

“It’s definitely a game we’ve been looking forward to,” Hobbs said. “Our focus has to be on controlling them. They’re really good offensively. Our defense is going to be the key as well as staying out of foul trouble.”

    Johnsonburg 70, Smethport 35

JOHNSONBURG — Johnsonburg took advantage of 12 players putting points on the board to roll to a 70-35 victory over Smethport in boys non-league basketball action Wednesday.

Austin Green paced the Rams’ spread out scoring attack with a game-high 12 points.

“It was just one of those games,” said Smethport coach Jay Acker. “I would guess we shot somewhere between 20 and 25 percent from the field and you’re not going to win games if you can’t put the ball in the basket.

“Johnsonburg played really good defense and they were very physical. They took us out of our game. They made their shots and we didn’t,” Acker added.

High scorers for the Hubbers were Costa, Alfiieri and Peterson, all with seven points.

Smethport (1-2) returns to action Friday at Sheffield.

    Cameron County 60, Punxsutawney 48

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Red Raiders put on a long-range show on Wednesday, hitting eight 3-pointers en route to a non-league victory.

Freshman Caden Beldin led the way with 19 points while Marcus Brown scored 15 points that came on five 3-pointers. Adam Shaffer (12) also finished in double figures for Cam. County.

“It was a good team win,” Red Raiders coach Mark Guido said. “Our freshman stepped up and scored 19 for us.”

Cameron County (2-0) will travel to Brockway on Friday.

    Otto-Eldred 74, Sheffield 27

SHEFFIELD — Cameron Grigsby scored 18 points to lead the Terrors (1-0). Jordan Sherwood tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Cole Sebastian added 10 points and Dillon Close dished out nine assists.

Tyler Hepinger recorded 10 points for Sheffield (0-3).

Otto-Eldred jumped to a 20-4 first-quarter lead and was up 37-8 at halftime.

The Terrors will host the Randy Stebbins Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

    Austin 58, Tidioute Charter 48

AUSTIN — The Panthers rode a big performance from Blake Burgett en route to their fourth straight victory to start the season.

Burgett finished with 23 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the win. Elsewhere, Mason Valenti (13 points), Jackson Glover (11 points, seven steals), and Parker Glover (nine rebounds) all had productive games.

Austin’s defense was especially solid in the first half, where they allowed just three points in the first quarter.

The Panthers will visit Sheffield on Tuesday.
