Bradford wrestling drops opener to Port Allegany

Port Allegany took advantage of the opening coin flip to control the lineups on the way to a 48-29 victory over Bradford, spoiling the Owls wrestling home opener on Wednesday.
“It really came down to the opening flip,” said Bradford coach Jamey Miller. “We wanted to manipulate our lineup, but after the flip, it played right into their hands and we couldn’t get the matchups we wanted.

“Port is one of the better teams in the league (AMWL) and we just didn’t get the results we wanted at the beginning of the match,” he added.

The Gators won eight of the 13 weight classes getting pins from Reese Vollmer at 120, Josh Reese at 170, Jake Kallenborn at 182, Dalton Distrola at 195 and Justin Young at 220. The winners also collected 18 uncontested points via three forfeits.

“We got some forfeits, but head-to-head we won 30-29 and all five of our wins were by pins, so that was great for our guys,” said Port coach Brad Greeman. “It was a good first dual match.”

Bradford, meanwhile, got pins from Derek Sunafrank at 160 and Nate Gehm at heavyweight.  The Owls also got a tech fall from Dillon Keane (152) and major decisions from Drake Hayden (126) and Tyler Thompson (138).

“Everyone wrestled well … I can’t complain,” Miller emphasized. “We just did not get the matchups that we wanted. We also made a couple rookie mistakes, but we’ll address them on Thursday and get them taken care of.”

Nine Bradford Junior High wrestlers picked up wins to lead the Owls to a season-opening 54-48 victory.

Starting their season at 1-0 were Lucas Laktash, Jacob Lucco, Cassius Rissmiller, Brett Thompson, Gavin Diguardi, Ashton Smith, Travis Barger, Christian Jackson and Eli McAvoy.

Bradford returns to action next week at Shinglehouse.

Bradford returns to action next Thursday at Oswayo Valley, while that same night Port Allegany will be hosting St. Marys.
