DUBOIS — For the most part, the Otto-Eldred girls’ volleyball team spent the season handing opponents straight set losses.
Saturday, however, was different.
In a second-round match in the Pennsylvania state tournament, the Terrors found themselves on the opposite end of a sweep.
Playing to a packed DuBois Area High School gym, District 10 champion Maplewood (21-4) defeated O-E, 25-13, 25-19, 26-24, to advance to Tuesday’s PIAA quarterfinal round.
While the Tigers looked dominant over the previously undefeated Terrors (24-1), O-E coach Jame Thomas doesn’t think that was the entire reason behind his team’s loss.
“It wasn’t that they were that much more powerful than us,” Thomas said. “We didn’t really execute our kills and I think their blocking got in our heads.”
From the opening serve, both squads played a fast-paced, high-intensity match. Maplewood, however, made less mistakes and was able to capitalize on more opportunities.
A blocked hit here, a shanked pass there, a missed serve in between. From the opening whistle, the Terrors found themselves playing from behind.
Maplewood dominated the first two sets, despite strong performances from the O-E trio of Harlee Vanscoter, Allison Cousins and Camryn Thomas.
In the third set, facing elimination, the Terrors went back and forth, keeping up point-for-point with the Tigers. Once O-E grabbed the lead, it looked as if the match was headed to a fourth set.
But with the score tied at 24, a pair or Terror misplays ended their season.
“This was the best team we’ve had in my five years of coaching,” Thomas said. “We’re going to graduate five starters so we’ll look to rebuild next season. We have our work cut out for us if we want to continue winning.”
