Two nationally-renowned musicians will present a free concert at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at noon on Wednesday in the Studio Theater of Blaisdell Hall.

Hailed by The New York Times for her “vocal versatility and an omnivorous curiosity,” soprano Lucy Dhegrae will be joined by Nicholas Finch, principal cellist of the Louisville Symphony Orchestra. Accompanying them on piano will be Dr. Joshua Groffman, assistant professor of music at Pitt-Bradford.

“Lucy and Nick are incredibly expressive musicians and they have a wonderful slate of pieces planned,” Groffman said.

The program will feature vocal works inspired by nature, spirituality and humanity’s role in preserving the environment: classic works by Samuel Barber and Charles Ives will be joined by newer works by Susan Botti, Peter Schickele, Matthew Gilbertson and Groffman.

The centerpiece of the concert will be “Fated,” a work written especially for this program by composer Daniela Candillari and poet Tanya Holtland. After travelling to Pitt-Bradford for a residency and workshop with students in March 2017, Holtland and Candillari worked intensively over the summer to create the new work for Dhegrae to premiere.

Of her composition, Candillari said she tried to “create a musical environment where the listener could really reach a sort of meditative state and have a chance to completely lose themselves.”

The performance is free and open to the public, and a light lunch will be served. The program was made possible in part by a grant from the University of Pittsburgh’s Year of Diversity program.
