SMETHPORT — In a week when history was being made with the announcement of a new football league, the Otto-Eldred Terrors captured their second straight and possibly the last AML North title with a 32-6 victory over the Smethport Hubbers on Friday night.
Senior quarterback Seth Drummond threw four touchdowns for the Terrors, two in the first half — one for 12 yards and another for six yards — and one in the third for 87 yards and one in the fourth quarter for 34 yards.
A 14-play drive by the Terrors was stopped by the Hubbers when Nathan Hollowell picked off a Seth Drummond pass at the Hubbers 10 yard line.
After a Hubbers drive stalled early in the second quarter, the Terrors took five plays to find paydirt, going 53 yards and capped by Seth Drummond’s pass to Cameron McGee for a 12-yard touchdown with McGee carrying for the two point conversion and a 8-0 score with 8:49 to go in the half.
Otto-Eldred’s Chase Sebastian came up with a fumble recovery at the Hubbers 40. Six plays later Drummond hooked up with Nick York on a six yard-strike followed by a pass to McGee for the two points and a 16-0 lead with 6:10 remaining in the half that held up to the end of the half.
Otto-Eldred fumbled on the first snap of the second half; the ball would be recovered by the Hubbers.
Smethport returned the favor when Drummond was picked off by Noah Costa at the Terrors 8. An offside penalty moved the ball to the Terrors 13 when Drummond threw a sideline screen to Dylan Close who raced up the left sideline 87 yards to put the score at 22-0. Drummond bulled into the endzone to add the two point conversion with 11:27 left in the third quarter.
Otto-Eldred kicked off from the Terrors twenty five after being flagged for a personal foul on the two point play. Smethport took over at their own 45 when Grant Ognen was picked off by Sebastian at the Terrors three yard line.
Smethport’s defense forced the Terrors to punt form their own end zone where a low kick was blocked and recovered by the Hubbers at the Terror 10. Otto-Eldred held the Hubbers on downs when Ognen couldn’t connect in the endzone, giving the Terrors the ball back at their own 12. Once again the Hubbers’ defense dug in forcing the Terrors to punt.
The Hubbers used a heavy dose of Nick Hollowell and Blake KInner put the ball at the Terrors eight. Hollowell slipped to the left and scampered the eight yards for the Hubbers’ lone touchdown. Johnson Breadon was stopped inches short of the goal line to keep the score at 24-6 with 44 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Terrors added an insurance touchdown using a 14-play drive that saw Drummond hit Gage Babcock for a 34 yard touchdown followed by Drummond and Babcock connecting on the two point play to put the score at 32-6.
After the game Terror head coach Nick LaBella was pleased with his team’s play.
“We didn’t start out good and the game was closer than the score says,” he said. “Credit their defense in the second half; they kept after us. Our defense came up big keeping them out of the endzone in the third quarter and they kept us pinned in our end most the quarter. Credit Seth (Drummond) he spread the ball around tonight and ran when he needed to. He just get better every week. These last two years the kids have stepped up and worked hard in the offseason and it’s paid off.
“It doesn’t hurt that Oswayo Valley’s baseball team has had success and we seem to be in a very competitive situation here with our volleyball team doing well. It’s a contest to see who can do better and it carries over into all programs. The defense has only allowed a touchdown a game against the North and I hope we can carry that into next week at Kane.
“They are a well-coached and physical team. Hey, we have nothing to lose by going there and giving them a game. We’ll see what happens after that.”
Hubbers head coach Adam Jack felt his team played well in the first half.
“Defensively we gave up two big plays,” he said. “We needed to score when we had them pinned deep in their end but we didn’t and that changed the game. I’m proud that the guys didn’t quit and played until the end.
“I will miss my senior offensive line next season. Nick Hollowell played an exceptional season for us. We have to take the next step and do better in the offseason. We also have to work on better tackling. I’m excited about what I hear about next season and the schedule. It will be a fresh start and I think a more competitive league.”
The Terrors will face the Kane Wolves in Kane next Saturday night for the AML Championship, with District 9 playoffs beginning the following week.
