The 38th annual Autumn Classic wrapped up on Saturday with a standing ovation for the bands that performed.
Bradford Area High School’s director of instrumental music Kathy Thumpston said it was one of the best Autumn Classics that she can remember.
“We had such a fantastic crowd,” Thumpston said. “The stands were full and the weather was extremely fair which made the performers feel comfortable while playing.”
Thumpston added that with the full crowd, vendors were able to sell a lot of food.
“We saw some of the longest lines we’ve had at the food stands,” she said.
This year’s Autumn Classic saw additional performances by bands from both St. Francis University and Slippery Rock University.
“Instead of playing towards the homestand the university bands were playing towards the students,” Thumpston said. “It was an attempt to recruit them.”
The tournament of the bands saw winners from four different classes.
For Class A, Coudersport Area Junior/Senior High School took first place, winning best visuals and best general effects. Saegertown Junior Senior High School took second place, winning best music with Otto-Eldred taking third place.
For Class AA, Maplewood Junior/Senior High School took first place, winning best visuals, music and general effects.
For Class AAA, Cochranton Junior/Senior High School took first place, also winning best visuals, music and general effects.
For the open class, McDowell High School took first place, with Iroquois Junior/Senior High School following in second.
Several other bands performed as well including Sheffield, Cameron County and the Bradford Area High School.
In preparation for next year, Thumpston mentioned that ideas are “floating around” but an official meeting won’t take place until December or January.
“We hope to continue the addition of the college bands for next year,” Thumpston said. “But it will all depend on their schedule availability as they have obligations to their school’s teams.”
