SMETHPORT — Just days away from districts, the Bradford boys golf team came up with an impressive showing at the Smethport Invitational on Friday.
The Owls finished second as a team in the 10-school competition with a 253, just one shot behind Cowanesque Valley’s winning score of 252.
Brice Whelan won a playoff with Tyler Vargeson of Cow Valley to finish third overall with an 80. Joey Frigo’s 83 was good for sixth, while Hunter Fox added a 90.
“Brice was consistent with two birdies,” BHS coach Travis Faulkner said. “He had a couple of drives that went astray or he would’ve been in the 70s.”
Whelan won his playoff hole with a tap-in birdie after just missing an eagle putt.
Frigo, meanwhile, posted his best-ever competitive round.
“Joey Frigo had a great round for us,” Faulkner said. “He’s looking good for districts.
Connor Alfieri of Smethport won the individual competition with a 78. He was followed by Cristo Parks (Kane, 79), Whelan, and Vargeson.
After Cowanesque Valley and Bradford, Smethport (256), Kane (260), and Port Allegany (270) rounded out the team top five.
Faulkner feels confident about his team’s chances at the District 9 Championships, which will be held at the Pennhills Club on Monday.
“Those three guys and Joe Gorse are excited and ready to play at Pennhills,” Faulkner said. “It’s a course they know well. We’re hoping to come away with a district title.”
The District Championship will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
