DUBOIS — Both Bradford golf teams earned top five finished at their respective outings at Wednesday’s DuBois Invitational.
Kate Huber and Elyse Godding helped lead the Lady Owls golf team to a fourth-place finish.
Huber’s 81 tied her with Sarah White and Alex Wagner of Mercyhurst Prep. While she would eventually be knocked out in the playoff, BHS coach Judy Abbey was extremely proud of her performance.
“It was pretty impressive shooting an 81 on an unfamiliar course,” Abbey said. “For a sophomore playing in a tournament against girls from all over the area is pretty impressive.”
White would emerge as the individual winner, with Natalie Brosig (McDowell, 82) and Godding (84) rounding out the top five.
“Elyse had a couple double bogeys but she also played well,” Abbey said. “It’s a long course and very narrow and I thought the girls did really well.”
Sophia Oliver (113) and Abby Zickefoose (118) combined to give Bradford a team score of 396. This placed the Lady Owls behind team champion Mercyhurst (356), McDowell (368), and Villa Maria (368).
Bradford will host a tri-match today involving Coudersport and Port Allegany.
On the boys side of things, the Owls placed fifth thanks to several solid performances.
Brice Whelan (83), Joey Frigo (85), Hunter Fox (87), and Joe Gorse (101) combined for a 356 to place Bradford behind just McDowell (322), Altoona (329), Punxsutawney (346), and State College (353).
“I was pleased with how we played today,” BHS coach Travis Faulkner said. “Looking at the results, McDowell is one of the best teams in District 10 and Altoona and State College are two of the best out of District 6 and we weren’t too far behind them.
Whelan’s 83 placed him tied for seventh individually, while Frigo and Fox finished tied for 11th and tied for 13th, respectively.
“Brice led the way for us again with two birdies,” Faulkner said. “He was a couple shots away from making the top five. Joey Frigo was our most consistent player today. Hunter Fox is turning up his play as Districts get closer.”
Willie Hoover of Punxsutawney won the individual title with a 72. Rounding out the top three were Skylar Carr (McDowell, 73) and Max Paris (McDowell, 74).
Bradford will take its top three players to the Smethport Invitational on Friday. The District Championships will be held at the Pennhills Club on Monday.
