Wolves continue winnings ways, dominate Port Allegany, 56-6

KANE — If there was any doubt as to the Kane Wolves picking up where they left off in 2016, they answered with a resounding yes Friday night.

Coach Todd Silfies’ squad scored three first-quarter touchdowns and three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 43-0 lead at the half and never looked back, topping Port Allegany, 56-6, in an Allegheny Mountain League crossover game.

“We really had a nice mix offensively in the first half,” Silfies said. “We had an opportunity to try a few things and Reed (Williams) handled the offense extremely well. This is the first time since I’ve been here that we didn’t have a new quarterback to start the season.”

Kane held Port Allegany to just one first quarter first down while scoring a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Ange Costanzo (108 yards on six carries) with Aaron Hottel kicking the extra point.

Kane scored their third touchdown on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Reed Williams (10-for-14, 161 yards, three touchdowns) to Ray Maze with Jake Alcorn running for the two-point conversion for a 21-0 first quarter score.

Kane scored on their first possession of the second quarter on a Williams to Alcorn 70-yard bomb with Hottel adding the extra point. Alcorn scored again running for a 13-yard touchdown with Hottel splitting the upright for the extra point. Kane’s third second quarter touchdown was an 11-play, 70-yard drive resulting in a Williams to Constanzo pass to the back of the end zone on a fourth down attempt to take the score to 43-0 at the half.

The second half saw the mercy rule in play as Port Allegany’s only touchdown came on their first possession in the second half with quarterback Jared Mahon handing off to running back Trey Stiles, who cut left and raced down the sideline for a 60-yard touchdown on the third play of the second half. Kicker Bryce Baker’s extra point attempt sailed wide right for a 43-6 score.

Kane scored on the last play of the third quarter on seven-play, 45-yard drive that saw Williams score on a keeper from a yard out, while Bobby Rumcik scored from 35 yards out to for the final points.

After the game, Silfies praised his team’s overall effort.

“We saw some of the younger kids step up on the offensive line and I like what I saw from Cyrus Novosel and (Reed) Williams is almost like having a coach on the field. We had a nice debut from Alec English. Erik DeLong (103 yards, 12 carries) gave us what we know he can do.

“Credit coach (Port Allegany coach) Pat Warnick for getting his team up for this game. They have gotten to a higher level of competition. They have a nice runner in Trey Stiles and they never quit tonight.”

As for the Gators, Warnick said, “We knew we were going to have a tough game but I think that we showed some heart tonight and played hard all night. Wyatt Dean and Dalton Distrola played well for us tonight. We have a tough game again next week at home with Ridgway and we will try to improve each week.”

Kane returns to action next week at home with Otto-Eldred (0-1), while Port Allegany plays Ridgway.
