The American Legion Post 108 met at 7 p.m. on Monday and voted against the would-be move from its Pine Street location in Bradford.
“It’s a shame because we find the current location inconvenient for the older folks,” said Clair Butler, a member of the Legionnaires.
He said the issue is specifically dealing with the two floors and having to climb up and down the flight of stairs.
“It’s become more of a hassle than we’d like for it to be when we make meetings, so that’s what the meeting was about, making it easier for us,” he said.
Although the move would have made it physically easier for the Legionnaires, it would make things even harder for them financially, according to Bill Hurrle, another member of the American Legion Post 108.
Even with an approval for a bank loan, Hurrle said it was not enough, which ultimately led to the deciding vote being a “no.”
“We ran through every possible scenario to make this work,” said Hurrle. “But ultimately, we could not figure it out well enough to make the move.”
Although they voted not to move, Hurrle said that the decision isn’t a “final decision.”
“Really, our final decision was to postpone the decision,” said Hurrle.
He explained that the Legionnaires would continue searching for a more affordable location that would meet their need of being a single floored building.
“I can’t say exactly when that will be, or when the next ‘move’ meeting will be,” he said. “But we are definitely going to keep it in the conversation at our normal meetings.”
For now, the Bradford American Legion will remain at the Pine Street location.
Their next meeting will be on Sep.18. Although the next meeting will not center around moving, the constant climb up the flight of stairs may or may not bring that conversation back into the equation sooner than expected.
