ST. MARYS — Recently, the McKean County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of North Central Pennsylvania, awarded 13 scholarships to students from Kane Area High School.
In addition to this award the Community Foundation is involved with the Partnership for Access to Higher Educations (P.A.T.H.) and will nominate all students who receive a scholarship from them to the P.A.T.H. program, administered through Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency.
The Jeff and Shelli Johnson Memorial Scholarship and the Tristan Sauers Scholarship, both for $500, were awarded to Frank Truden, son of Daniel Truden and Renee Bloom. Truden will attend the Pennsylvania College of Technology this fall with a focus in welding. During his time in high school, Frank was a member of the basketball, track and baseball teams along with Little Dribblers.
The recipient of the $1,000 Sashy and Gladys Kane Scholarship — for students who play an active role in their school and community and live in the borough — is Davis Gardner, son of Troy and Melissa Gardner. Gardner will attend Edinboro University this fall for criminal justice with plans of becoming a state trooper. He also plans to play football at Edinboro University. During high school, Davis was a member of the basketball and football teams.
The recipients of both the Diana J. Hulings Memorial Scholarship for $525 and the Sashy and Gladys Kane Scholarship for $1,000 is Lindsey Greto, daughter of Lori and Michael Greto. Greto will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, majoring in psychology. In school, she was a member of student council, treasurer of SADD and the school newspaper, and a member of the softball and volleyball teams. She volunteered at the Special Olympics and K.A.R.E. for Kane and participated in theater arts.
The recipient of the John and Donna Hulings Scholarship for $500 is Marcella Stanisch, daughter of Max and Laura Stanisch. Stanisch will attend Edinboro University this fall with a major in nursing. In school, she was involved with Special Olympics, K.A.R.E. for Kane, altar serving, volleyball, softball, SADD and the Athletic Association, and she was class secretary and school store president.
The recipient of both the Steve Jerman Scholarship and John and Donna Hulings Scholarship, both $500, is Lauren Gentile, daughter of Anthony and Tina Gentile. The Steve Jerman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Kane senior who is pursuing post-secondary education in the area of elementary education, criminology, social services or health-related fields of study. Gentile will attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this fall majoring in nursing. In school, she was the secretary of SADD, a member of the varsity soccer team and was involved with Special Olympics, K.A.R.E. for Kane, Youth Group and Vacation Bible School.
Brandi Wheatley, daughter of Angela and David Wheatley, also received a Steve Jerman Scholarship for $500. Wheatley will attend Pitt-Bradford majoring in criminal justice. In school, she was president of Student Council and the Athletic Association, as well as a member of National Honor Society, Academic Bowl, yearbook, newspaper and the Kane Volunteer Fire Department.
Camryn Cummings, daughter of Sam and Barbara Cummings, received the $1,000 Chuck Daly Memorial Scholarship, established to award a Kane senior pursuing post-secondary school who participated in at least two sports during their junior and senior years. Athlete/scholar Chuck Daly was head basketball coach for the Detroit Pistons and the U.S. Men’s Olympic basketball team. Cummings will attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania to major in pre-med with the goal of becoming a pediatrician. In school, she was a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, K.A.R.E for Kane and the basketball, volleyball and track-and-field teams.
Keaton Rounsville, son of Rod and Lisa Smith, also received a $1,000 Chuck Daly Memorial Scholarship. Rounsville will attend Clarion University majoring in political science and criminal Justice with a minor in sports management. He will also play football for the Clarion Golden Eagles. In school, he was a member of the football, wrestling and basketball teams. He was a volunteer for KARE for Kane, Little Wolves Football Camp, Little Wolves Basketball Camp and Art in Wild. He was also a Kane Little League umpire and is an attendee at Believer’s Chapel Church, Olean, N.Y.
Alaina Barner, daughter of Jason and Michele Barner, is the recipient of the $1,000 Gary Meckley Scholarship. The Gary Meckley Scholarship is awarded to a graduating Kane senior from the track team who is a two-year letter-winner, with one letter earned their senior year. The graduating student must also be a track student/athlete at the college they are enrolled. Barner will attend Clarion University this fall, majoring in speech and language pathology and minoring in audiology with a plan to work as a speech pathologist. In school, she was involved in Student Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions, class vice president, newspaper editor, yearbook editor, Bible Club, Trout in the Classroom, Athletic Association, National Honor Society, prom committee, Weightlifting Club, painting sets for school musicals, volleyball, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and softball. In her community, she’s volunteered at several sports tournaments, taught religious education classes, served Thanksgiving dinners to the homebound and packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child and backpacks for the Second Harvest Backpacking Program.
Connor Crowley, son of Peter John and Holly Jo Rezzelle-Crowley, is the recipient of the Paul Robert and Frieda Roberta Calkins Rolfe Scholarship for $1,000 each year for four years. The Paul Robert and Frieda Roberta Calkins Rolfe Scholarship is awarded to graduating student continuing their education in the fields of nursing or engineering who resides within the borough of Mount Jewett. Crowley will attend West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.V., this fall as an honor college student and major in wood science and technology with a double minor in business management and forestry. He aspires to work in research and development within the wood industry. In school, his activities included Boy Scouts, National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, varsity baseball, varsity golf and legion baseball.
