A charge against a Bradford man accused of concealing a teen from his mother and police was bound to McKean County Court Wednesday before District Judge William Todd.
David R. Kelsey, 44, of 186 E. Main St., is charged with one count of concealment of the whereabouts of a child, a third-degree felony, according to court records.
Court records stated that between April 8, 2016, and April 14, 2016, he let a 16-year-old boy who ran away from home stay at his house, knowing that the boy’s mother and police were looking for him.
Police received multiple tips that the boy was staying with Kelsey, but when police went to Kelsey’s home on April 11, 2016, he denied that the teen was there; police continued to get tips that the teen was at Kelsey’s residence, according to court records.
The boy’s mother reached out to Kelsey, and “Kelsey made demands to her that he could get the child to return if she got the police and CYS off his back,” records stated. On April 14, 2016, the teen called his mother from a restricted phone number, and police were able to information from Verizon indicating that the number allegedly belonged to Kelsey.
Police returned to Kelsey’s residence, where his girlfriend admitted the teen had been staying there, court records stated.
Kelsey came to a voluntary interview at the Bradford City Police Station, where he said he kept the boy hidden at the boy’s request and “apologized for lying to other officers about the child’s whereabouts,” court records read. “Kelsey stated he did this for the child because he cares about him.”
Kelsey is free on unsecured bail.
