SMETHPORT — A Smethport man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on allegations that he was driving under the influence of a controlled substance that was causing him to hallucinate.
Robert Herrick Pearsall, 28, of 5667 Route 46, was arraigned before District Judge William Todd on charges of possession of a controlled substance, a felony; possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence of a controlled substance, both misdemeanors; and careless driving, a summary charge, court records stated.
According to court records, at 2:09 p.m. Wednesday, Kane-based state police were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person at 30 Shunk Lane, Keating Township, who was going in and out of a gold Dodge Journey, slamming the door and yelling.
State police requested assistance from Smethport Borough Police, who arrived on scene first.
Pearsall “was observed acting strange and appeared disoriented as though he was under the influence of a controlled substance,” court records read. The complaint described him, stating he “could not stop fidgeting,” he “was experiencing hallucinations” and his “speech was slurred and he was mumbling incoherent statements.”
Pearsall told police that there was one person in his passenger seat and another person in the trunk of the vehicle, but officers determined that Pearsall was alone, court records indicated.
As Pearsall was under state parole supervision at the time, police called his parole agent, who started a search of the vehicle and allegedly found a plastic baggy containing a crystal-like substance.
Pearsall was taken to Bradford Regional Medical Center, where he agreed to a blood draw to determine if he was driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
He was committed to McKean County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail, and he is scheduled to appear in Central Court on July 27.
