SMETHPORT (EC) — Bailey Westfall and Dominic Alfieri, who will enter their senior years at Smethport Area High School in August, have been selected to attend the 33rd annual Rotary Youth Leadership Conference, sponsored by Rotary International’s District 7280, to be held June 14-19 at Westminster College.
The conference will feature 5 ½ days of activities, including lectures and discussions of leadership skills, youth-related concerns, public issues, community service, career guidance and recreational activities.
At the request of the Smethport Rotary Club, one of 44 in District 7280, the Smethport Area High School submitted qualified candidates on the basis of leadership potential, good citizenship, scholarship and desire to attend the conference.
“Our objective is to offer outstanding high school seniors an opportunity to live, work and play together in an atmosphere of friendly competition, which will offer a challenge for the students to accept the responsibility of leadership,” said the Rotary Club’s RYLA Conference Committee chairman. “Much of each student’s time will be structured with programs, such as group discussions, guest speakers, newsletter and chorus. Perhaps, the greatest benefit will come from sharing this experience with the approximately 100 other outstanding young men and women from high schools in this district.”
At SAHS, both students study in the academic curriculum.
Bailey is active in band, choir, Peer Helpers, track and cross country.
Dominic’s extra-curricular activities include band, choir, golf and National Honor Society. In the community, he is a member of Boy Scout Troop #501.
