BIB: Our daydreaming ways have gotten us in trouble again.
We had an error in Tuesday’s column. As reader Randall Durner explained, Anthony DeLucia did not die in France.
Randall did pass along more about Anthony’s story, which we are glad to share with our readers today.
Randall writes, “Your article on Elmer DeLucia and D-Day was appropriate and timely; however, I believe (and you may already have had readers notify you about this), Elmer’s brother Anthony (Bib) DeLucia was NOT killed in France, but was lost with his entire bomber crew in China while returning from a bombing mission to Japanese occupied Formosa during World War II. Elmer’s other brother also served in the European Theater and was wounded in action.”
He’s right.
Randall continued, “His brother’s remains and those of the entire bomber crew were found by Chinese herb farmers while looking for herbal plants on a mountain in China. Apparently the bomber, while returning from the mission flew into the mountain, killing all crew members.
“The brother’s remains and those of the crew were identified by DNA analysis and personal effects at the crash site.
“Elmer gave a presentation on this event at the Bradford (Area) Public Library a number of years ago. His brother’s remains were returned to Bradford and it is my understanding he was buried next to his mother in St. Bernard’s cemetery.”
QUESTIONS: A Bradford man called with a couple of questions on Bradford history. He thought a reader might have the answers.
First, he was talking to a woman from Crook Farm on Monday about the old schoolhouse there. He explained the school building used to sit in the area of Crookerhouse Lane, and he thought someone might have information on its move from Crookerhouse to its new home on the Bradford Landmark Society’s Crook Farm property.
He wondered, “What year was it moved?” Also, “Would anybody know what route they took?”
Our reader also recalls a gas station called Seven Dials that was located off Interstate Parkway, before the “Y” in the road going to the Bradford Regional Medical Center.
He wants to know why it was called Seven Dials.
He thought the dials might have something to do with the streets, but he can’t come up with seven streets.
