SMETHPORT — Pat Miesowitz, commander of the Bucktail Post #128, Smethport American Legion, spoke Sunday afternoon at the McKean-Cameron Bi-County American Legion’s Memorial Day program at the McKean County Courthouse.
Urging the audience not to forget the fallen heroes, their families and their sacrifices, Miesowitz referred to the Preamble of the Constitution of the American Legion, Auxiliary and Sons that states: “Preserve the memories and incidents of our association in the Great Wars,” which he said, “serves as a reminder that while some gave their all, we should be more willing to give as much as we are able to help keep our nation worthy of their sacrifices.”
Pat Eaton, Bi-County commander from American Legion and VFW Post #574 in Mount Jewett, served as president of the day.
The following American Legion posts were recognized: #108, Bradford; #138, Smethport, #194, Emporium; #258, Port Allegany; #489, Ludlow; #574, Mount Jewett; #887, Eldred; and #976, Crosby. VFW Post #6347 in Mount Jewett was also recognized.
The Rev. Thomas Beam, pastor of Hope Lutheran Church in Smethport and an Air Force veteran, offered the invocation and benediction.
The Smethport Area High School Band, directed by Sarah Kois, played “The Star-Spangled Banner” and several other selections.
Miesowitz placed a wreath at the Bi-County American Legion memorial marker on the west lawn of the courthouse. Dedicated in 2006, the marker contains the wording “In memory and dedicated to all veterans who have served and will serve in the future with honor.”
The memorial rifle squad, commanded by David Alexis of Post 6347, fired the traditional three volleys.
